Why Do People Need Dialysis?
People need dialysis when their kidneys begin to fail
Too many patients wait until it’s too late to begin dialysis. Fear, uncertainty, or simply not knowing their options leads many to delay treatment until their symptoms become unbearable. This emergency situation is often referred to as “crashing into dialysis.”
When kidney function is severely reduced, a patient is considered to have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). These conditions are most commonly caused by hypertension (HTN) or diabetes (Type I or Type II), though other conditions such as polycystic kidney disease can also lead to kidney failure.
Once a patient reaches CKD Stage 5, dialysis becomes a necessary treatment option. Delaying this step can result in serious symptoms like a persistent metallic taste in the mouth (uremia), extended nausea, or overall decline in well-being.
That’s why it’s so important to begin planning early. Working closely with a nephrologist can help ensure you start dialysis at the right time, with a treatment plan that fits your health needs and lifestyle goals.
